Motorcade

January 24th, 2007

Yesterday I was riding along K St. around 2pm, when up ahead I noticed the now-familiar whooping and honking of an official motorcade. DC is a very official place; after being here for a year I hardly take notice when helicopters land beside me and lots of official looking people jump out into black SUVs with mirrored windows. You just have to let them do their thing and try and get the reassuring attentino of anyone who like he might shoot or tackle you.

Yesterday’s motorcade caught my attention, though, for two reasons. First of all, there didn’t seem to be anybody being transported. Almost all the trucks held just one driver (most of the vehicles were pickup trucks, so you could see in the back). Secondly, all of these pickup trucks, obviously brand new, said CHEVROLET in big white lettering on the windshield –kind of Latino-style, but in Arial– and had little blue “American REvolution” flags flying on both sides of their cabs.

I should mention that the DC Auto Show opens today (not yesterday, though…), so it’s possible this was related. However, I have to wonder why we are blocking traffic for what amounts to essentially a loud Chevy ad. And if they are indeed transporting official people, why are they being transported in that same ad?
