advertising

Don’t worry, I’m not going to put up ads here.

And don’t get me wrong, I have quite strong feelings regarding advertising’s role in our society. I could go on for hours.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Pandora internet radio lately, which is in some sense basically a continual advertisement I’m subjecting myself to. It has a very nice feature where you can skip songs you don’t like or that you’ve heard too often.

Here’s my two plus two equals brilliant idea: apply this kind of user-based personalization to web advertising. Give users a “I’ve seen this goddamn ad too many times” button and a “I wouldn’t buy this crap even if you threatened to kill my mother” button at the bottom of your ad. You get far more effective advertising and the consumer gets to be annoyed less and to learn about exciting new shit he or she doesn’t need!
